It was so great to be transported back to Three Pines once again and to experience another fantastic and exquisitely written mystery by Louise Penny. Having retired from the Surete du Quebec, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is now Commander of Quebec's Surete Training Academy. Another fantastic Inspector Gamache mystery. Coming out of retirement to head the Sûreté Academy and to mold and inspire the future of the Sûreté du Quebec, Gamache finds himself in the middle of another murder, with himself as a suspect. Gamache's history has certainly led to having many enemies, but when one ends up murdered and Gamache acts out of character, what's the deal?

A Great Reckoning began a bit darker than I had expected. There was a certain darkness present throughout the story, always lying underneath and occasionally raising its head.

We learn quite a bit more about the past, both of the community of Three Pines and the Surete.

This may have been the best book of the series.
