What Members Thought

Jenny (Reading Envy)
For readability, this book would get five stars. It is easy to get through, has good pacing and kept me interested. But the complete lack of realism and shortage of danger made me decide to give it only three stars.

The basic story is of a count, forced to give up his substantial home and property and relocate to a hotel in Moscow, in 1922. Because of the revolution, he is not allowed to leave again until sometime in the 1960s. At some point he has to move from his generous suite to a tiny room o

A very well written book about an aristocrat who was being "hotel arrested" in Metropol, a luxurious hotel in Moscow. A lovely, absorbing read with an incredible cast of characters, all set in Russia amidst the difficulties of life in the early 20th century. Towles is an amazing writer - his Rules for Civility was excellent as well

This book is perfect — atmospheric, droll, precise, life-affirming. Even though it was long, I did not want to rush through it; I savored everything. Amor Towles is astoundingly talented. Thank you for sharing your gifts with the world, Mr. Towles.

A pure pleasure to read - the Count is a gentleman to the core and his story, although set at a slow pace, unfolds like a multi-petaled flower, revealing just enough information at just the right time. The author is a master of nuanced language. A lovely story!
