The characters in this novel are wonderfully complex. I love the portrayal of the women. It was hard for me to read of the brutality of the Iranian prisons so the book was not strictly speaking enjoyable.
I did find the scenes with the son in New York an unwelcome distraction. I would love an entire book describing his life, but the scenes felt unfinished to me.
I loved the suspenseful ending.

This is such a lovely, beautifully written book. Yes, there is horrific brutality and senseless cruelty, but the love and dignity of the main characters shines through it all.

Until I started reading this book, I had not thought of the Iranian revolution for many years, and, in fact, remembered very little about it. This story follows a Jewish family where the father, Isaac Amin, is arrested and accused of being a spy. He is tortured and treated cruelly under the new regieme. Eventually, he is released and the family flees Iran.
