All I can say after reading this book is "Wow!" With Elizabeth Street, Laurie Fabiano creates a work of historical fiction out of the true story of her Italian immigrant great grandmother, Giovanna, who settled in New York City's lower east side during the early 20th century. Giovanna's story is heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time.

Elizabeth Street seems to be the story of the author's great-grandmother, a midwife from Sicily who emigrates to the United States after the death of her first love. Giovanna's story, which is amazing is interspersed with chapters featuring her descendants, which were a bit jarring and discordant, revealing information that the story should have unfolded naturally. I found it led me to search through the text for the relevant chapters (view spoiler)
