Stories about young boys rarely do anything for me, and I tend to avoid them, but with Le Otto Montagne recently hitting local cinema screens, I thought I'd give The Eight Mountains a try before seeing the mountains in all their glory. I didn't expect to have my heart wrung so hard by such a small, unassuming book.

4.5 sterren. De kalme, onnadrukkelijke stijl van Cognetti kruipt langzaam onder je huid zodat je aan het eind met een knoop in je maag blijft zitten. Het thema van het boek wordt verbeeld door het Tibetaanse verhaaltje over de acht bergen: wie is gelukkiger, degene die thuis blijft in zijn vertrouwde omgeving, of degeen die op reis gaat, op zoek naar het geluk? Precioso libro sobre la amistad cargado de poesía sobre la naturaleza y la montaña. Empieza sencillo y va construyendo poco a poco a los personajes y los hace madurar como al paisaje, sus reflexiones como la construcción de una casa, sus vidas como las estaciones. La trama es tan insulsa como la vida misma y hay muchos huecos que nos permiten identificarnos con varios personajes según el momento en el que nos encontremos.
