A friend and I were discussing heroism and leadership. Who are the real life Captain Kirks out there in history? And she recommended this book. This is the very passage she used to entice me:

I'd heard about Shackleton often but still wasn't excited to listen to this book (an Audible daily deal). But, I was completely drawn into the story. The narrator was excellent and the story was good, full of interesting characters as well as adventure. I'm certainly recommending this book to my boys. A strong 3.5 stars, truly. When can Goodreads have half stars?

This was a brilliant way to both end the reading year 2020 and begin the reading year 2021. Endurance is written almost like a novel, the details are incredible. The author has done extensive research, has obtained access to diaries from the expedition and has even interviewed some of the crew. Whilst reading I could feel the cold, miserable conditions they were living in, whilst at the same time marvel at their optimism and even sometimes - at the earlier stages after the loss of the Endurance
