McCarthy is among the most unreadable authors I've ever encountered. If all McCarthy's books are like this, tell me so I can stay away from them. We're talking about the kind of author that dumps the grammar book into the trash because, of course, as a Profound Genius(tm) he's beyond that. No quotation marks. Almost no apostrophes. Better than "No Country for Old Men," at least. Actually, I liked the early part, before it hits Mexico, where it covers the boys. But once it's in Mexico, it departs from reality. There is the hackneyed romance with the sultry senorita, who the main character seduces. And then there's the long monologue from the grandmother of the senorita, who turns out to have been the fiancee of Gustavo Madero, a politician of great importance murdered in gruesome fashion in 1913.
