I'm glad I finally got around to reading this book. It was quite interesting, though I think I enjoyed the first half more than the second half. During the first half of the book, you learn about Joan and Alan Root's lives as wildlife film makers. The second half of the book focuses on Joan's life after her divorce from Alan and her crusade to try to save Lake Naivasha where she made her home. The second half of the book is much darker and Joan has a much more isolated and lonely life. ...more

This is a biography of a remarkable, selfless, single-minded woman whose support, organisational skills and insights helped her husband to become one of the world's best wildlife and nature photographers and film-makers. After her husband left her for another woman, Joan Root went on to become an active conservationist for the lake where she lived. Whilst Joan might deserve 5*, unfortunately the biography only warrants 3*. ...more
