I read this book by flashlight during a winter storm where we were without power for 36 hours. Brr! I'm just posting about it now because it was part of my Books on the Nightstand Postal Bookswap, where six of us have been sending books in a circle for a year. Now that the circle has closed, I can make sure these books are counted in my 2016 reads.

3.5 stars? I'm not sure XD
This book is pretty weird, but after reading other people's reviews, those who are already familiar with Penelope Fitzgerald's writing said that this is her unique style. Gloomy, a bit vague, with weak/failed/indecisive main characters, and of course - an unsatisfying ending.
So if you're not fan of those things, I don't think you can enjoy Fitzgerald's book. I have had difficulties in enjoying this book too, actually, because it feels so slow, and full of bad people w ...more

More like 3.5 stars actually. I liked the book, in fact, the tone, the plot with subtle dark comedy where everything turns against the protagonist whom you begin to care for and the literature itself.
