The low rating will be controversial among Carpentier's fans. This was "magic realism" (a term he invented) in 1962, years before the Latin American Boom took off after Garcia Marquez' "One Hundred Years of Solitude." (There is a legend, which may be an urban one, that this novel inspired Garcia Marquez to start writing "100 Years".)
