Outstanding, complex, complicated. Probably benefits from rereadings. Marlon James made the right choice in sparing no details.

But.

That 'complicated' goes both ways. I am uneasy, as I have no doubt James intended readers to be, about the romance (calling it that because of character perspectives, not my reading of it). Outstanding book! But be forewarned that it is brutal. This book puts you into the head of a slave. Horrifying!

The audiobook is superb!

Well, with one exception: for about 30 seconds they sang the words used in the text to a contemporary hymn tune. What??? Do your research!
