Compared to Ulysses, which took me months to read with critical aids, the short stories of James Joyce are easy to understand and enjoyable on multiple levels. He wrote them while he was quite young, and I noticed several references to characters thinking about how they hoped they accomplished a certain thing in their lives by age 31 or 33 (Joyce was in his 20s).

OK, so now I can say I've read James Joyce -- that is if listening to it on audio counts. I doubt I will be tackling Ulysses or Finnegan's Wake anytime soon (or ever). I will say that the narrator on this book was really excellent. It was a pleasure to listen to him. And, Joyce really does an amazing job drawing his characters by telling you just the right things so you feel like you know not just who they are, but what also motivates them.
