Ishola Alao, known as Baba Segi, has a problem that upsets his stomach and general well-being. After two years of trying, his fourth wife still does not show any signs of being pregnant. He already has a stable of kids with his other wives, but what is the use of another marriage if it doesn't give him more offspring? The story takes place in modern-day Nigeria when Baba Segi, a prosperous middle-aged businessman seeks to find help for his fourth wife's inability to conceive a child. The tale that unfolds shows the complexity of a polygamous marriage as jealousy and vindictiveness lead to tragedy and betrayal.

Having read so little African fiction, I found this fascinating, enlightening. I have nothing to compare it to so if I call it refreshing, sobering, a little magical, and funny, I could be wrong. But I am so glad I read this. Some characters are despicable but still all are lovable and the secret lives-- also the public lives-- are really interesting. I pretty much devoured this book.
