Never having read Thubron before, I chose this book as my reading companion on a recent trip to Tibet. In some ways this was a success, but not so much in others.

I am in awe of Thubron’s writing. His descriptions of colour, texture and every little detail of the physical environment were so clear, it was almost like watching a documentary rather than reading a book. Another exquisite travel book by the master

I rate Thubron highly and have enjoyed many of his travel books. This one is shorter than most, and he is getting older. It is set in the Himalayas and Thubron's lyrical prose, thoughtful musings, open vulnerabilities and nuanced description of the pristine plus the touristy, without being judgy, shines.
