What Members Thought

I read this in high school and then again recently with the Novella Club. I find how much I like Heart of Darkness depends entirely on the assumptions I make about the author's intentions. Is he ignorant of how racist his characters are, or pointing out the inequality and racism? There are a lot of questions like this. Also, Conrad isn't a writer you can breeze through. The pacing is twisting and languid, with analogies thrown into practically every paragraph.

What else can be said about Heart of Darkness that has not yet been said?

A beautifully, descriptive work. The descriptions of place are outstanding. The slow pace of the work mirrors the leisurely, lazy flow of the river and the slow lives of the characters. The darkness that inhabits the place and the human soul is always at the heart of this work. But, it didn't have the emotional pull on me. Therefore its a three for this book.
