This is the story of a young factory worker during Ceausescu's totalitarian regime, who gets caught pinning notes into men's suits headed for Italy. The notes all say the same thing: "Marry me" and then her name and address. The factory worker is desperate to get out of Romania. This is a powerful book filled with anxiety, torment and nighmarish images. Reads almost like a memoir, fluidly and beautifully, "I knew that our hungry groaning would be coming along soon, like the trains on the tracks.

A difficult book, this novel by Nobel Laureate Herta Muller. A fired factory worker travels by streetcar, narrating by turns observations about the idiosyncratic passengers and driver, and telling the story of her life in no discernible order. I'm sick and should be in bed. But I wanted to post quickly about this book. This book was small (only 200pp) but dense. I picked it up as I thought I could knock it over quickly in a few days before we went on holidays in Cairns and I could relax on the beach with a big, thick book. Oh how I was wrong.
