Loved this. I knew nothing about the DRC before reading this, and although I still don't know much, I know a little more. The geography alone is fantastical; a huge rainforest with a massive river threading through it, jungle so dense as to be practically impenetrable and an infrastructure that has long been devoured by nature. I'm pretty impressed with Tim Butcher's fortitude and I'm looking forward to reading his book about traveling in Liberia. However, I was a little bothered by his Stanley hero-worship. I managed to overlook that and focus on the more important aspect of this book: Congo Then and Now. I really liked how Butcher juxtaposed images from Stanley's visits to particular spots with his own photographs captured during his journey.
