Politics hasn’t changed, regardless of time. The book is a fascinating read about the rise of Marcus Tullius Cicero - Roman politician, orator, lawyer and philosopher. The book is told from the point of view of Tiro - his close slave/secretary who invented shorthand. The book begins around 70 B.C. when Cicero is starting out in his career. This is an amazing account of what life was back then - the political intrigue, corruption, the various facets of human nature - it could be the present time ...more

Enjoyable read although the fact that there isn't one single event around which all action revolves does produce some less interesting chapters. Many names, difficult to keep track of. Almost no attention to Cicero's philosophical work. ...more

Bingung mau menulis apa.... An enjoyable retelling of the early career of Cicero in the latter days of the Roman Republic.
The senator is in much demand for his skills as a lawyer when he is approached by a sicilian who is on the run from the islands corrupt governor. As he then takes on the prosecution of the governor he makes plenty of enemies and the book then follows his manoeuvres to become consul.
The skill of Robert Harris is to make the political machinations and minutiae into a thriller that had me turning the page

First book in a series about Marcus Tullius Cicero, one of the greatest thinkers and orators in ancient Rome. Very well written, very compelling and if you liked McCullough's Masters of Rome series, you might like this one too.

No need to tell, I love this book! As usual Harris's words are flowing nicely (and the translator also did a super nice job, since I read the Indonesian version), the setting is very believable... I can imagine ancient Rome Republic really well. And Cicero - ah, Cicero - he's my hero! Along with Tiro! :) Can't wait to continue to the second book! ...more
