There comes a point in Louise Penny's Gamache novels when you can't or don't want to put the book down. I am not reading the series in order but now that I have read three and heard her talk at an event I know that I will read them all eventually. I enjoy the evocation of places, whether Three Pines, Old Quebec or Montreal... and the depiction of the motley group of characters that are central to each novel. Here we have some lovely quirky or difficult individuals, aside from the complex drama..

84% and I'm just weeping on the couch. Louise is the MASTER of ratcheting up the suspense. I love these characters so much, and I'm completely terrified of what could happen next.

My only regret in reading this book (which is #9 in the series) is that this is the first one I have read (it will most definitely not be the last!). Beauvoir's pain med addiction is out of control and Francoeur is doing everything to keep it that way.
Frustrated by his work, Gamache heads to Three Pines to help Myrna with a friend who has gone missing. Of course the friend ends up murdered and Gamache works to solve a myst ...more

First book of the series for me due to library availability, but quick to pick up the scheme. A pleasure to listen to the narrator's interpretation and delineation of characters, I especially liked his creation of Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. His exploration of thought and decision making, handling of his staff, personal interactions.
Penny writes an excellent mystery. The story's multi-layers, interplays, descriptions, all coalesce into an appealing whole. I await my next library reserve for ...more
