The premise of The Ninth Orphan is that there is an underground organization called Omega that produced 23 orphans to become super-assassins. The orphans are numbered 1 through 23. In this first book of the trilogy, Number 9 is being chased by Number 17 because he wants out. Omega's ultimate goal seems to be world domination, although that was never positively stated. It was fun to see how 9 could outwit his enemies, and how close they could come to catching him. 17 was a fierce opponent.
