I debated what to give this book as a rating. Not one or two stars. Three? It was better than three. I narrowed it down to four or five, couldn’t decide even then.

2.5 to 3 stars. Much too depressing and graphically violent for me.

The earth turns and the wind blows and sometimes some marvelous scrap of paper is blown against the fence for us to find. And once found, we become aware there are places out there that are both foreign and familiar. Funny what the wind brings.

What a powerful story. On the surface, it's about young friendship and one decision that breaks their bond. The years that follow and the political turmoil building in Afghanistan only heighten the path of Amir's life: through anger and guilt to the quest for atonement and hope for the future.
