Re-read with audio. I would still rate it a 3-3.5

I really enjoyed this first book in the In Death series, getting to meet Eve Dallas & Roarke at the beginning of their relationship, which is fraught with complications as he's a suspect in the bloody murder case she's working.

Set in the future, with all sorts of modern conveniences, morals & laws, it's a good police procedural, gritty & interesting, with romance & a cat called Galahad. I do wonder why Summerset is not Somerset, I don't know why that irritates me, but it does.

This is definitely

Murder mystery set in the future (2058). Once I got over the shock of a future world, the mystery and romance captivated me.

Reminds me of Rachel and Trent in Kim Harrison's The Hollows series, but without the magic, Eve Dallas is a tougher and smarter detective then Rachel is a witch, and Roarke is more sweet and sexy than Trent.

Likes:
* Beautiful and tough thirty something, Lt. Eve Dallas
* Eve's appreciation of coffee
* Mavis Freestone, Eve's one-time arrest turned friend
* Roarke, mysterious, pow

I have heard so many good things about this series. When I saw it cheap on Amazon, one of my reading challenges was a series. The truth is I have read a couple of books by Nora Roberts, and one or two of them had a pinch of mystery. (I am a reader that likes the police procedure series in order.) my public library has different copies of the series, but I couldn't find the first one when browsing the shelves. I will have to read a book from the series decided to read it to see what the series is ...more

How have I not read this series before? Mystery SF was my thing for quite a while.

This was surprisingly good. Although billed as a mystery, this was futuristic, what I would label science fiction and a romance to boot. The characters were great. I lived the lead, a smart take charge woman who managed to be kick ass without being obnoxious and immature. There's a lot of depth here that I think will come up in later books. There was one scene where Roarke pushed the boundaries of what I consider

I have been meaning to start this series for a while now. I have read a few of Nora Roberts books in the past and had liked them, so chances were good that I was going to enjoy her writing under the name J.D Robb. And I was correct.

I mean whats not to like, we have a psychological thriller set in the future, yes there is "romantic" moments, well to be honest there was sex and the build up to potential romantic relationship. It's the year 2023, guns have been banned and are illegal, prostitution

This combination of police procedural/romance/SF book really sucked me in. I devoured the next two in this long-running series.
