I decided to watch the Sky TV production of this show purely having seen so many recommendations for the book but upon enjoying that it made me want to read it slowly and see if it could fill in a few gaps.
I really liked the characters and the plot is so thorough and magically written in the most believable way that makes you consider in an alternative Worlds and myths/creatures . I enjoyed the alchemy too and tradition of it all.

The leather-bound volume was nothing remarkable.

Diana Bishop comes from a long line of powerful witches. She tries to suppress her magic and lead an ordinary life. Everything changes once she opens Ashmole 782, an ancient manuscript. Suddenly, witches, daemons and vampires are noticing Diana. A centuries old vampire, Matthew, becomes particularly enthralled with her.

This one caught me off guard. I am not sure where I even heard about it originally, but I had put the book on my wish list on Audible.com. I don't know what I was expecting, but evidently it wasn't what I got.

I ended up checking out the audiobook from the library. Now that I'm done with it, I'm really wishing I had book 2 on hand ready to start listening to as well. Looks like I'm heading to Audible to buy it!
