What Members Thought

Artist: Ni Anluain. Inspired by Nalini Singh's character Archangel Raphael
★★★★✩ I read Angels' Pawn first, thinking it a prequel, when really it is just a companion novella to Angels' Blood. For me, this was a disadvantage; while I loved Elena in this story, Raphael was not a very likeable character in that one, IMHO, and I wondered not how, but if Ms. Singh was going to be able to covert me to a Raphael fan. She did, but the going was rough.

This was a decent story but I just couldn’t relate to the main characters, especially Raphael, who seemed too disconnected from human reality. He seemed so distant, so otherworldly that frankly, I couldn’t understand why he bothered (why any of the archangels bothered, to tell you the truth.) I also couldn’t stand Sara, the Guild Director and Elena’s best friend. I couldn’t take her seriously with all her screeching ‘I’m Elena’s BFF!! You tell me what’s going on or else!’ We’re told over and ove

This is the most spectacular and exciting book I've read in months - hell maybe years. It has an amazing premise - angels create and hold sway over vampires. Though these vampires are more like servants than bloodsucking fiends. They even have festive galas attended by the famous and the mundane.
Elena Deveraux is a vampire hunter though not like any hunter you've seen before. She is more a retrieval expert. She hunts vampires who have escaped from their angel masters. She is tagged by the Archan ...more

I've heard great things about Nalini Singh as a writer, and this is the first book of hers I've read. It was a little hard to get into but after the first 30 pages or so I didn't want to put it down. I took a small break and then I finished the rest of the book in one sitting.
I liked Elena's strong-willed, stubbornness, and courage. She doesn't take any crap from anyone, even if she ...more

It's been a long time since I first read this book that I remembered very little about it. I remember liking it, but for some reason I never got to continue the series. The publication of the sixth book not long ago, however, and the fact that the series is constantly mentioned as one of the favorites of the genre, made me want to re-read the first book and get re-acquainted with Elena's world.

While this book contains a pretty solid heroine and a new take on the whole vampire thing (plus a new take on the angel thing)....
It didn't blow me out of the water. There was potential there, but unfortunately the second book was a little less of a hit and the third was a bit of a slog to get through--and that's with having them read to me on audio.
Still plan on giving her other books a try, but don't know that I'll be continuing on with this series any time soon. ...more

The fact that I have already purchased and downloaded the next 2 books in the series is a big clue to how much I liked this book. I really liked the fact that it's not in 1st person. I love UF but prefer 3rd person. Seems like the majority of UF series are in 1st person. I like to get some of the story from the other characters perspective. While I like good sex scenes, I like how Singh doesn't just toss them in just to have them. She works them in when they work with the plot.
