Georgina isn't your typical succubus. Disliking what she is, she mainly focuses on "feeding" from men without as much of a conscience (like her boss), but doesn't have to slaughter them like succubus of legend. When working in the bookstore as a manager, she meets her favorite author, starts dating a new man in town, and works with other paranormals to figure out who is offing powerful paranormals in the city. “We all have moments of weakness. Georgina isn't your typical succubus. Half the book is left with discoveries of death and having no clue what's up, while the other half is knowing what's going on but tracking down the particular naughty entity. The book has a good amount going for it - there's backstory to explain decisions made but it doesn't weigh down and is done stylishly. There's the humorous side (this book is downright cute) and the personal life of Georgina as she tries casual dating, but there's also mixing with dangerous elements of the city and solving a mystery before it's too late for all of them.

Despite reservations I had for what kind of book it was, I was pleased to see the humor was naturally cute rather than obnoxious and overbearing.

Georgina is a fun character who isn't angsty because of her past mistakes, even if she is wistful. Instead of focusing on woes she accepts what she is but tries to make the best of situations. Side-characters are mixed joys since the author isn't the love interest I thought from the first, the man she's dating turns out fun and three-dimensional (you don't want anything happening to him), the boss is sleazy but well-written, and the other paranormals stand out as authentic enough even if you want to strangle some of the more powerful ones half the time.

Georgina working in the bookstore and enjoying books so much is a big plus. Her co-workers teasing her about making her favorite author's new books last a month was something most readers can relate to, although there's no way I could drag it out like her. All those years must give her way more willpower than this bookworm has.

It's not a serious book and the mystery isn't hard to guess (I knew right away it was between two people), but the ending was a good one that left a wide opening for a sequel. I don't know that I'll continue the series since I see some signs of what may come, but it was better than I figured it'd be from the humor that usually affects this kind. ...more

★★★½☆ (This is a review of the audio book.) Elisabeth Rodgers narrates the six novels in the Georgina Kincaid series, and she certainly does a nice job of it in the first one. While she didn’t differentiate the voices dramatically, the way she read it made it so I had no trouble telling who was speaking when the many characters were in an extended dialogue. This, I’m sure, is partly due to the writing craft of the author.

I’ve had such strong feelings about this one, it makes it hard to rate. It is no coincidence that Georgina is fickle and, alas, so am I. (Something I didn’t particularly want to look at about myself, especially while trying to decide on kitchen counter top material.) Just who does she love? Seth or Roman? Interestingly, (view spoiler). Although, I’m pretty sure it isn’t Warren, her bookstore boss, whom she has been boinking for a while, thereby slowing sucking the life out of him; she’s a succubus, after all.

This aspect of her nature is part of my issues with Georgina. As much as there is something about her I really like – and I feel for her because she doesn’t want to be a succubus but a human – I didn’t like that she had feelings for one man and indulges her sexual appetites with others. I don’t mean just her ‘prey’ in this instance, but those whom she is interested in romantically – to varying degrees. Her amorous feelings were capricious, to say the least. She sure had succubus tendencies before she actually became one, no matter how noble her reasons for giving up her soul in her distant past. Nevertheless, I'm betting this aspect gets explored more as the series continues.

There were lots of males – angels, demons, imps, nephilims, and humans – in the storyline for me to drool over; more so than females, and they all think Georgina is beautiful – yet remain just ‘friends’ with her. They range from someone who can save her from a bad predicament, to someone she can turn to for a shoulder to cry on when relationships go south, to someone from whom she can ask a pretty big favor. However, the females that do pop up are pretty dominant or opinionated.

It was clear early on, when writer Seth discussed the likelihood of Georgina’s favorite book characters – Cady and O’Neill – ever getting together, that this storyline is going to be a long running “Peyton Place” before a happily ever after – if we ever get one! There is so much more than the standard ‘love triangle’ going on.

Still, there is the whole question of who killed a vampire named Duane, (view spoiler), both of which makes a good mystery through-out. Also, the plotting was good; it and the characters held my attention, and I liked the author’s “voice.”

What took this and Succubus On Top (my next review) from 4 to 5 stars is that I could not put them down. They were a stand out in a genre that can often times seem either far too overwhelmed with world building and exposition, or like reading the script to a really horrible, low-budget porn flick.

The descriptions were enough to let you see it without making you skim for more dialogue.
