Hot damn, that was a fun read! I know full well the reason I've been avoiding the series was that I would get hooked, and have even more books on my to-read shelf, but I just can't help it! Dresden is a sarcastic, bitter, tongue in cheek rogue that would make Han Solo proud. The plot moves quickly, the action is imaginative, and the humor puts the perfect cherry on top. What a great character! ...more

Harry is great. I love his sense of humor. Can't wait to read the next book. ...more

I really enjoyed the premise of this book and although Dresden got on my nerves sometimes (he seems to think he's responsible for everything and doesn't give himself some credit), I liked him well enough that I'm giving him a second chance.

I don't think I'm continuing this series in audio though. Maybe James Marsters has gotten better as the books move along but for this first book, he was average at best. His voices are not distinctive enough (sometimes I can't tell if it's Dresden or somebody

I found this book to be incredibly boring. The hero, Harry Dresden, is a piddling wizard who needs a faery spirit to help create all potions. He is more like a bungling idiot than a wizard. In every chapter of the book, someone or something is out to kill him. Harry didn't have a prayer of investigating the magical homicides for always trying to protect himself mentally and/or physically from all the attacks. It was beyond annoying to try to read this book and figure out the mystery with all the ...more

Audiobook with James Marsters as the narrator.

It was a unique and satisfying experience, James Marsters' voice bringing everything to life effortlessly and portraying Harry Dresden's dry sense of humor expertly.

As the first book in the Dresden Files series, this book introduces us to the world of Harry Dresden, Wizard. We get some insight on his view of life, his relationship with the interesting people (or not-people, in the case of Bob, his air spirit bottled in a skull) that are constant in h

I looooved it! Why did I wait so long to read these? Harry is a refreshing voice - funny and vulnerable. He isn't cocky or imbued with superpowers. He's a wizard, but he still struggles, which made him easy to root for. Even though the baddie was a little obvious, Butcher kept me guessing with how it would all get resolved. Does it get any more exciting? The answer appears to be yes. Sign me up for the whole series! ...more

Harry Dresden shares a first name and a profession (wizard) with Harry Potter, but the resemblance ends there. Dresden lives and works in Chicago, where he is a special consultant to the police force when they are faced with an “unusual” crime. Can’t get more unusual than two people killed “in the act” when their hearts exploded out of their chests. He also has problems with the White Council. He’s on “probation” for violations of the laws of magic and his “warden” suspects that Harry’s the one ...more

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I liked the characters of Harry, Murphy, and Mac (Susan not so much) but I didn't get sucked into the story as I expected. I've been told this series gets better as is goes along so I am sticking with it, because who doesn't love a wizard named Harry? ...more

Really enjoyed this - I think I'm in love with Harry Dresden. I love a man with a wicked sense of humour and Harry's definately got that. A man of mystery and magic. I found myself cheering Harry on (especially when he was buck naked fighting a demon *sighs*).

Harry Dresden - wizard, is called in by the police to consult on a double murder - where the couple's hearts have literally been torn out - magic is suspected and Lt Murphy wants to know how it was done. Unknown to her Harry isn't supposed

Action-packed quick read filled with snarky comments and some serious magic. This book reminded me of The Hollows series by Kim Harrison, but Harry is a better wizard than Rachel Morgan is a witch. And he's also a better detective.

It says 3 stars, but it is more of a 3.5 star.

The only thing that knocked it down from being 4 stars was near the end it sort of lost my attention. I don't know what it was, because I hardly put the book down before that point.

I am still excited to continue my journey through the books of Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, but I currently have books #3,4, and 6 at my house and am snowed in. Book #2 is sitting at the library in the next county over and I plan to go and get it on Monday as lo

This is an expert blend of fantasy and noir, and it is better than the SF Channel show it inspired, although the show was fun.
