For the first time, I have re-read a book and found I disliked it, when the first time I read it I loved it. I don't know why the second reading (some four years after the first) was so disappointing, but I found the story laboured, the 'message' a bit patronizing and it all a little saccharine sweet for my liking. Perhaps this is more an indication of the changes in me (I have probably got more cynical over the past few years!) but if I hadn't had to read it for my reading group, I probably wou ...more

This modern-day fable is not for the faint of heart. It is thought-provoking and, at times, disturbing.

Pi is shipwrecked with a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan and a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker all sharing the same lifeboat. How he faces survival and co-exists with Richard Parker makes for a fascinating study.

Without giving away anything for those who haven't yet read it, I will tell you that our book club had a very interesting discussion on why some of us were more willing to be

A great read I would recommend. A story that caught me right in the beginning and I flew right through the well told story. It's an easy read. ...more

I resisted this book for a long time, for three very good reasons: 1) it’s literary fiction; 2) it won the Man Booker Prize, and I’m historically 50/50 on liking Man Booker nominee and winning books; and 3) everyone talked about how amazing it was, and that kind of lavish praise makes me wary.

It wasn’t until my sister said she wanted to see the movie and I read a bunch of reviews that said the book was one that needed to be discussed that we decided we should read it. She may live 500 miles away

A fantastical, dreamlike tale. I really enjoyed this book, it felt like a parable to me. At times I felt as hopeless as Pi for his rescue and his search for the grace of God. It was a moving, endearing tale of the triumph of the human spirit.

I absolutely loved this book. It's vivid, fresh, larger than life, gorgeous, haunting, --- these are the words that come to mind when I think of this story. The twist at the end just might have me heading back to page 1 to read this again! ...more

HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE BOOK!
I liked the beginning and the end, but the middle... all the boring, never-ending miserable chapters in the middle... *sigh*
