I read this book knowing nothing of what it was about. I didn't even read the synopsis. And I vehemently encourage everyone to do the same. Because it seriously cannot be explained in a synopsis, and it might just give you a wrong idea of what it is really about.
The only thing you need to know, if you haven't read it yet, is that it is AWESOME.

This book was such a huge surprise. I was not expecting to fall in love with it, especially when I realised it was about angels. I'm kind of a sceptic when it comes to the whole angels and devils lore. It's not like I've read a lot about it and have not enjoyed it, on the contrary actually. I tend to stay away from it on instinct. But this one surpassed my expectations on the genre.
My infatuation with this started out with the writing. Sadly, I have come to expect mostly poor or mediocre writing when it comes to young adult novels, but the writing here was almost flawless. It was melodic, pure and it made sense, which lately I've found to be rare.
The characters were loveable and real and raw and OMG I love them so very much.
Karou, the main character was so relatable. She was a strong and kick-ass protagonist, and she was, (yes, thank god) NOT stupid or vapid. Zuzana might easily be my favourite character. At least she was the one I could see more of myself in. She was a tiny and full of energy little thing.

«She thought Zuzana's tininess was perfect, like a fairy you found in the woods and wanted to put in your pocket. Though in Zuzana's case, the fairy was likely to be rabid, and bite.»

Brimstone, the most enigmatic and fear-inspiring character was incredibly well constructed. I had no idea what he really was up to during the book, up until the very end. I just knew I loved him. He had an unique way of seeing things.

«"I don't know many rules to live by," he'd said. "But here's one. It's simple. Don't put anything unnecessary into yourself. No poisons or chemicals, no fumes or smoke or alcohol, no sharp objects, no inessential needles - drug or tattoo - and... no inessential penises, either."»

And that's the thing about Laini Taylor. She makes these statements, which make you laugh, but they have so much truth to them too.

«"It's a condition of monsters that they do not perceive themselves as such. The dragon, you know, hunkered in the village devouring maidens, heard the townsfolk cry 'Monster!' and looked behind him."»

«"Have you ever asked yourself, do monsters make war, or does war make monsters?"»

And then Akiva. He's such a mystery in the beginning, but my heart melted for him throughout the story.

«"Once upon a time, a little girl was raised by monsters. But angels burned the doorway to their world, and she was all alone."»

It's here that the plot thickens. We begin to see both sides of a war we don't understand. And the relationship between Akiva and Karou deepens. And this is the reason why this book does not have 5 stars. The romance was so quick. Karou knows he's her enemy, and yet she lets herself fall for him, faster than a shooting star. It is beautiful, and I loved reading it, but it still seemed too sudden. I would have expected her to take a little longer to come to terms with the situation, and not jump straight into his arms.

We then learn about Madrigal and her story with Akiva. And this was beautiful in a Romeo and Juliet way. A love destined to end badly before it even begun. Madrigal is the one who teaches Akiva to hope. To hope for love, for a future, for peace. For a new way of living. One where war and death are not the main elements.

«"Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there's no actual magic in it, but when you know what you can hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic."»

The breaking of the wishbone was very emotional, and though I had mostly guessed who Karou was, there were still some elements of surprise.

«"Such a little thing, and brittle, and the sound it made: a sharp, clean snap." »

I actually cried in this book. If you know me, you know I seldom do. The part where Madrigal is in prison and Brimstone visits her is what got me. Not the actual being-in-prison thing, but that this was where the relationship of something akin to father and daughter was most prominent.

«"They know, child. They already know. And they aren't ashamed of you, either."

It was as close as he would come, and it was good enough.»

«"Do you remember the wishbone, when I was younger?"
"I remember."
"I finally made a wish on it. Or... a hope, I suppose, as there was no real magic in it."
"Hope is the real magic, child." »

In sum, this reads like a fairytale, and deep down, it might as well be one. But it is not the kind of fairytale I would expect to read. There is ugliness here, and war and reality. And that is why I loved it. It was not sunshine and rainbows. It was real.
That ending though, it broke my heart. I really need to know what happened. And there are so many unanswered questions in this volume. I cannot wait to dive into the next.

Well, this was f*cking fantastic *O*

Loved the heroine, Karou; the scenario, Prague; the writing is flawless, and the way the author managed the mystery around Karou and her origins, Brimstone and his wishes-for-teeth business, and Akiva, the crazy handsome tormented angel, was just brilliant -- albeit exasperating.

Sabem aqueles livros que olhamos para a capa e nos apaixonamos imediatamente e depois ao lermos a sinopse ainda ficamos com mais vontade de ler?
Este livro foi assim para mim. O facto de só ouvir maravilhas sobre a escrita da autora só aumentou a minha curiosidade e vontade de o ler.
A verdade é que fiquei um bocadinho desapontada. Até ao segundo terço do livro estava a gostar imenso. A história era interessante, a escrita bonita, as personagens boas e para além disto tudo tinha anjos. E não uns a ...more

Terminei esta leitura confusa. Não sei o que pensar, o que sentir e ainda menos o que escrever em relação a esta livro de Laini Taylor. Desde a sua publicação que tenho curiosidade nesta história, por causa do titulo (afinal o que é isso de ser filha de fume e osso?), por causa da capa (que é linda) e porque, na realidade, nunca percebi em que género de YA se enquadrava esta livro.

First Impressions: I relutanctly give it 3.5 stars for the world-building (in the fantasy lands, at least) but I was a little disappointed with the cliché star-crossed lovers who dream of changing the world romance. This book had so much potential!
