Jane Eyre é um dos livros ingleses mais famosos do século XIX, fazendo parte da época de ouro dos romances vitorianos. Publicado em 1847, é o trabalho mais famoso de Charlotte Brontë e já foi adaptado inúmeras vezes ao cinema e à TV – nunca vi nenhuma. No seguimento da última adaptação cinematográfica, que estreia em Portugal no dia 21 de Abril (com Mia Wasikowska no papel de Jane Eyre), o Goodreads levou a cabo um desafio no qual decidi participar e que finalmente me deu alento a pegar finalmen Jane Eyre é um dos livros ingleses mais famosos do século XIX, fazendo parte da época de ouro dos romances vitorianos. A obra já faz parte do domínio público e pode ser obtida, por exemplo, aqui – intercalei, por isso, a leitura física com a leitura no Kindle, e esta segunda opção acabou por dar bastante jeito porque o aparelho traz dicionário incorporado e o texto contém várias palavras/expressões cujo significado desconhecia.

Jane Eyre é um relato na primeira pessoa da história desta personagem, uma jovem inglesa da primeira metade do século XIX. Logo no início do livro, percebemos que Jane nos está a contar a história algum tempo depois dos factos que irá relatar no livro, cujo início se situa na época em que Jane tinha 10 anos. Orfã, vivendo na casa da tia e dos primos, Jane maldiz a sua sorte: é constantemente agredida física e psicologicamente, rebaixada, oprimida e, pior do que tudo, não é amada. Quando surge a oportunidade de ingressar numa internato, Jane vê neste novo rumo uma forma de “recomeçar”, mas as privações teimam em não a abandonar. Decorridos algum tempo, já com 18 anos, Jane é contratada como governanta de Thornfield Hall, uma casa cujo proprietário é Mr. Rochester, um homem considerado unanimemente pouco atraente, com alterações frequentes de humor, mas ao mesmo tempo misterioso e bastante inteligente. É sem grande surpresa que vemos Jane apaixonar-se por ele, e a relação entre os dois acaba por ser o motor principal da história e um dos seus principais pontos de interesse. Claro que nem tudo é um mar de rosas e as duas personagens têm de passar por vários desafios antes de encontrar a felicidade.

Adorei a Jane. Uma mulher independente, insubmissa, determinada e crente nos seus princípios. Para além disso, bastante inteligente e com um desejo profundo de ser amada, resultado da privação desse sentimento que sentiu ao longo de toda a sua vida. É através dos seus olhos que conhecemos esta história, as suas personagens, os locais por onde passam, e as suas palavras são, na maioria do tempo, música para os nossos ouvidos. Charlotte Brontë escreve maravilhosamente bem, e empresta à sua Jane uma perspicácia na avaliação das outras personagens que inevitavelmente deliciam o leitor. Também a grande maioria dos diálogos são interessantes e muito bem construídos.

Mas o percurso da personagem principal não se faz só da descoberta do amor: é igualmente um espaço importante de reflexão quanto à moral, à questão das classes sociais, do papel da mulher na sociedade que nos é apresentada, e também da importância da religião. A história contém também alguns elementos da literatura gótica, que acabam por lhe dar outro “sabor”, do qual gostei particularmente.

De um modo geral, foi uma leitura que apreciei bastante. Confesso que a componente “romance” não me cativou tanto como em outros livros do mesmo género, e houve alguns momentos que considerei menos interessantes no desenvolvimento do enredo (especialmente na parte que se segue à descoberta do grande segredo de Rochester), mas isto trata-se apenas de uma questão de gosto pessoal. É um livro que recomendo absolutamente, um clássico que vale a pena. Há um tempo, li algures que normalmente as pessoas têm tendência a gostar mais de uma das irmãs Brontë: depois de ter lido O Monte dos Vendavais e Jane Eyre, a minha preferência vai sem dúvida para este segundo. ...more

Como na famosa canção de Katy Perry (e peço desculpa pela menção de uma cantora pop numa opinião sobre um clássico) a história de "Jane Eyre" foi, para mim, "hot and cold" (quente e fria). Por vezes achei-a interessante (a parte do mistério gótico, momentos da infância de Jane e ínfimas partes do romance) e noutras... horrivelmente aborrecida (a parte em que Jane se encontra com esse possessor de imensas virtudes que é o St John Rivers, provavelmente a personagem estereotipo co ...more

Jane Eyre, is one of the classics that I’ve been meaning to read for ages, but it took a pretty cover to (finally) buy it, and a hangover to start reading it.

Jane Eyre is indeed the story of Jane, from her miserable childhood, through her slightly less miserable adolescence and to her adulthood. Orphan of both parents, she lives with her aunt and cousins, but it is a life without affection. When she is sent to a school far from home she believes that her conditions can only improve, but it isn't without trouble that she finishes her education and is ready to seek employment.

This story was not new to me, but I had only watched the TV series, and some time ago, so the details were a bit hazy. I knew there would be a happy ending, but then, there always is (I had quite forgotten everything else about the ending). I was actually expecting a lot more drama in the beginning (I think I got the order of some events wrong), so the more I read, the more I dreaded what was (I thought) sure to come.

There is a very strong Beauty and the Beast feel to it. Yes, I know both the love birds are as ugly as they come, making it Beast and the Beast, but to me it is about their personalities. Jane very nice and proper (even if a little blunt), Mr. Rochester quite the devil (and drama queen), teasing and insulting. I liked Mr. Rochester’s wild personality, even if sometimes it is a bit too flamboyant. Jane’s uptightness got to my nerves sometimes, but I liked her bluntness and honesty. But most of all, it was the bickering between these too: the intelligent semi-arguments were really fun to read.

My biggest problem with the classics (and I say problem is the very loosest of senses) is that I have to adapt to the values of the times when they were written. It is most likely that a modern day Jane would take the easier route, by running away WITH her beloved and not running away FROM him (I know I would, along with taking more conventional measures to deal with the problem in the attic). That made some parts in the book a bit harder to enjoy (or should I say, not to scream at the characters), but that choice was also in tune with the character's personality and way of being.

But to me, the strongest point of this book is how it is written. The use of the first person takes away the distance I could have felt due to Jane’s personality. And the descriptions are absolutely vivid. I was constantly lost on 19th century England, taking walks through the moors, sitting by the fireplace, studying people… Making the drama all the more, well, dramatic, because it felt like it was happening to me.

I really liked this book, even though it took me quite awhile to finish. It's very well written, and it's not only about romance, it portrays a society that is slightly different from ours - one that not so long ago was the norm. The down side was that there was a bit more drama that I felt was necessary, and all the religious babble, that started to really get on my nerves by the end of the book (courtesy of a late comer character). Still, it definitely deserves it's place among the classics.
