Spectacularly creative world building and a compelling main character. The prose kept me engaged throughout.

This was an overall really good book! I know this is a Mulan retelling of sorts and I thought this was very well done. I could definitely see where Lim drew from the legend. I quite liked Maia. She was strong, feisty, intelligent, kind and brave and was an all around enjoyable character. I really, really, really loved the romance. It was slow paced and extremely believable. Shelves: fantasy, ya

This was a highly enjoyable young adult fantasy book. I have not been enjoying YA Fantasy as much as I used to but this book was a nice reminder of how enjoyable it can be when done well. The book is really well written the story just seems to flow off the pages. Maia is a very likable character who has strong motives and a good sense of herself.
