As it so happens, during a normal visit to Covent Garden, Gabriel spots a suicide bomber and gets drawn back into the dark world of espionage and resumes his role as the legendary assassin. This episode of the Gabriel Allon saga is particularly heart breaking. The first half of the book unfolds with Gabriel jet-setting across continents and using pure brain work to track a new terrorist group responsible for suicide bombings across Europe. Since he is “officially” retired he takes on the USA’s request to do their dirty job. Gabriel agrees because deep down he cares and he cares about saving lives. And thus starts yet another exotic tale of an intense commitment to his idea of saving the world.

In this episode, Allon is very composed, very intense and hardened as usual. This time around, firearms do not play a large role in complete contradiction to the adventures till “The Defector”. It seems that Gabriel now uses the gun as an after-thought. In “Portrait of a Spy”, we are introduced to Nadia Al-Bakari, the daughter of Zizi Al-Bakari, who was tracked down and killed by Gabriel Allon in “The Messenger”. “Portrait Of A Spy” plays upon all the right heart strings and the Author ties up the story and the finale like a Class Act Composer who draws out new melodies from his classic musicians. Gabriel Allon still remains the best tragic hero of our times. Like every Gabriel Allon adventure, “Portrait Of A Spy” is a book to be savored and not rushed through in a thoughtful and measured tempo. You will turn the pages because you will be compelled to and you will be entertained with every page

Here we continue to see the magnitude of love between Allon and Shamron. Instead of being the no-nonsense, gritty super handler of Allon and team, he is seen as a concerned father that shows a very vulnerable side when it comes to Gabriel. The fatherly bonding between Shamron and Allon peaked in “The Defector” and reaches a new crescendo in “Portrait Of A Spy” giving this relationship an out-of-the-world endearing touch.

Having grown up with the espionage genre as crafted by Robert Ludlum and Fredrick Forsythe, Mr. Daniel Silva is a proud successor who carries the legacy of espionage genre with class and finesse. In fact, in my opinion, I think he is the BEST in the business as on date. The plot has relentless suspense, narrated with intelligent spycraft weaved in with twists and turns. This instalment continues to be a battle of wits between Allon and his adversaries.

“Portrait Of A Spy” is gripping fiction with a whole lot of Gabriel Allon, Ari Shamron and Mossad moments. Allon continues to be larger than life. As the saying goes, he moves like a shadow, strikes like lightning and vanishes like thin air. Up to date setting. The events covered in the book were like reading yesterday's newspaper. Gabriel Allon was at his best.
Highly recommeded to all who enjoy spy/special-ops thrillers, political intrigue, or just current events. ...more
