I'm a fan of Daniel Silva's writing, although at times it's almost a bit too much (think: Ricardo Montalban rhapsodizing about 'rich Corinthian leather'....) and Gabriel Allon is one of the best good guys in the genre, but 'Moscow Rules' was a letdown for me primarily due to its conclusion. A bit too much action, mostly of the unbelievable variety.

"Moscow Rules" is the 8th adventure of the legendary defender of Israel, Gabriel Allon. The tone of Gabriel has shifted from his general melancholia to that of a more complete man with a family. But that does not mean that there has been any dilution in the power and the full punch of Gabriel Allon. For those who have been following him from his first appearance in "The Kill Artist", its just wonderful to discover that he is not alone anymore and there are people who deeply care about him. The b "Moscow Rules" is the 8th adventure of the legendary defender of Israel, Gabriel Allon. The tone of Gabriel has shifted from his general melancholia to that of a more complete man with a family. But that does not mean that there has been any dilution in the power and the full punch of Gabriel Allon. For those who have been following him from his first appearance in "The Kill Artist", its just wonderful to discover that he is not alone anymore and there are people who deeply care about him. The best being, Ari Shamron, who shows a LOT MORE of humane mentoring and fatherly bonding with Gabriel Allon. The otherwise ruthless Ari Shamron is seen here worrying to death about the well being of Gabriel.

Having grown up with the espionage genre as crafted by Robert Ludlum and Fredrick Forsythe, Mr. Daniel Silva is a proud successor who carries the legacy of espionage genre with class and finesse. In "Moscow Rules", Gabriel's universe shifts focus from the monsters of radical islam to the real time threat of arms deals originating from current Russia that has a global impact. In this book Gabriel's adversaries are the formidable ex-KGB (now FSB) regime of Russia, where oligarchs knit the "managed democracy" that we all read about in the news. The main plot continues to have relentless suspense, narrated with intelligent spycraft weaved in with twists and turns. This instalment is more of a battle of wits and has less action as compared to the last 7 books in the series. As usual, the political environment described in this book is very real and very tangible. Assassinations of journalists as described in the book can be related to the real life murders of many journalists in the Vladimir Putin regime. This book aptly describes the Russian struggle for freedom of press. It showcases the fact that journalism continues to be the most dangerous profession even in current Russia.

The entire storytelling hinges around a very well crafted description of the political scenario, the oligarch rules, the economic environment and the sublime fear that prevails among Russian denizens. Merged with his fiction, Mr. Silva draws a dangerous picture of the impact that Russia may still have on global peace.

Moscow Rules is gripping fiction with all the right adrenalin charged Gabriel Allon, Ari Shamron and Mossad moments. Allon continues to be larger than life. As it says in the book, he moves like a shadow, strikes like lightning and vanishes like thin air. As usual, sleep is the last thing that will be on your mind when you read this instalment of a Gabriel Allon adventure. ...more
