Man this is impossible to review. I feel like it's a book you're either going to like or not, and possibly strongly so. It's sprawling, like America itself, and big and deep and complex and intense and also simple and true-feeling and captivating. Not a lot happens in some parts and everything in the world happens in others. I found myself yelling at the recording, "NO! I FINALLY FINISHED THIS BOOK!!! This would have been 5 stars for me if it hadn't been so long; it would be a great book to take when stranded on a deserted island, when you have all the time in the world to savor each page. But for me, I've got a pile of books next to my bed crying "read me! read me!"
I loved Gaiman's Sandman series (start here: The Sandman, Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes), but I've avoided his more traditional novels, perhaps for fear of being disappointed.

I had forgotten about this book until I began reading Neil Gaiman's new book, Neverwhere. Very strange, but smart. I liked this one in particular because much of it took place in Wisconsin and other locations in the upper midwest. The gods are the ancient gods who are still around us, living in Wisconsin. The House on the Rock plays a large role.
