The is an amazing work of fantasy and an un-put-downable read. I was reading it and loving it but I didn't realize how completely I had entered Pullman's world until the part of the book when Lyra finds a child who is without a daemon - I felt like she'd found a child without a head, it was so disturbing. That feeling of shock and horror at the absense of something that doesn't even exist in my world proved his skill at creating an alternate universe that I really lived ...more
