I am so fascinated with stories set in the Gilded Age of the U.S. It was a fascinating period in the history of the U.S. as we moved from holding on to the norms of the past (especially the social norms) and push up against the modernization/liberalization urge to break free of what is expected of you and follow your own heart, passions, and dreams.

Some years ago I have read another novel from Edith Wharton, that did not impressed me so much. In fact I was almost certain before starting this novel that I would be disapointed at the end. But I wasn't. This novel is not that bad. It has conflict, strong characters and all the ingredients to be a good one.
