Quite surprisingly good for a first novel (certainly better than sister Charlotte's awful 'The Professor'), and quite possibly where Charlotte got the idea for a 'poor and plain' governess heroine in the first place. A remarkably neglected book. Anne deserves her place in the canon through merit, not necrophilic nepotism.

Oh dear, poor ernest Agnes... She goes from pampered youngest daughter to governess on a bit of a whim, and then finds out that it's not half as easy as she thought, or at all enjoyable! Whilst I know this book was written based on AB's own experiences, she doesn't half make it hard for the reader to sympathise with Agnes, who for most of the book is just rather priggish.
