Clariel in many ways reminded me of the first book of The Old Kingdom, Sabriel. However, Clariel is annoying and not as interesting as Sabriel.

HOWEVER. Clariel is a tragic figure and one that will be remembered. You have actually already met Clariel, and that is as far as I will go.

Clariel is one of those books where you have to wait a while for things to develop. It's given to you bit by bit throughout, some threads from previous events starting (because this takes place about 100 years before

I knew Clariel was the prequel to the Abhorsen trilogy, so I read it first. Now I see that it is actually called book #4 in the series. Sorry, not sorry! I'm sure I'll be able to go into the trilogy feeling a bit less lost at least.

So, first of all, I'd say I blame her parents most of all. Clariel is a very strong willed teen who has been uprooted from her comfortable life & routine, to a life that is actually nicer (or at least filled with more prestige & more apparently a lifestyle of wealth -

DNF at about 1.5 hours in.

She wasn't doing anything. Clariel had ambitions, but the whole story was talking and watching and listening. She went to school and listened to gossip. She walked through the streets and watched the unrest. Oh, I guess one guy pretended to attack her with a knife, but even that didn't make anything happen.

Also, I didn't care about Clariel's ambitions. She wanted to live alone in the woods. Maybe this would have been more interesting to me if I actually saw her doing wo

I can't figure out when this takes place in relation to the other Abhorsen books. Is this far into the future? Someone told me that it's supposed to be 600 years before Sabriel. I missed that detail in the audiobook.

This book reminds me of Lirael and since that was my least favorite of the Abhorsen Trilogy, it's not a good thing. At least Lirael was about learning about the Clayr and Lirael learning magic. So far this about the boring customs and prejudices among the guilds, how much Clariel wan

This is a prequel, not a sequel. That being said, excellent writing! This story is soundly written, fresh, and vivid. In one word: awesome. Also sad, incredibly sad, but awesome none the less. Nix really knows how to make you feel for a character and knowing her fate the second the bronze mask came out of the box twisted my guts hard. Wonderful world building! And way to make me seriously want to slap a couple groups of people I had previously loved!
