This took several attempts to start before it grabbed my attention, which is the reason behind the 4-stars. I really enjoyed the female heroine, Harry, the strength of her character and her determination to do what she felt was right. I struggled to like the main male character, Corlath. But in the end, I was endeared to him. I really like how each and every characters story and involvement felt so complete at the end. I'm rarely left so satisfied.

There were parts I really liked in this story. I liked the heroine and the fact that she was not perfect. I am not always one for fantasy, but I enjoyed this. Some of the writing was not easy for me to follow. I tend to like books that I don't have to work hard to figure out who the people are and what is happening. Overall, though, I did like the book.

Wow, this took me FOR-EV-ER to read. I was busy busy with girls camp, but the book was slow paced which didn't help me want to finish it.
It was an alright book. I love some of the author's other books, but as I stated above, it was hard to read because I would start falling asleep after 10 minutes of reading because it just couldn't hold my attention. Plus, on the cover it says its a romantic story, but there is literally zero romance until the last ten pages. I need a bit more then that. This w ...more

I will be reading more from Robin McKinley. I really enjoy her writing style and imagination. I feel like I'm reading a classic while reading her books, well, the two I've read, rather than a modern fantasy that tries too hard. I'm glad I read The Hero and the Crown before I read The Blue Sword, although The Blue Sword was written first. The Hero and the Crown comes first in storytelling time and reading it first helped me understand names, places and events that The Blue Sword refers to. I don'

not as good as the first half of hero and the crown, but better than the second half. 3.5
I think my opinion of this book suffered because i read hero and the crown first. Not only was I aware of things that happened in hero and the crown, but the first half of hero and the crown was so good I went in with expectations that were a bit too high.

I really liked this book! I enjoyed McKinley's writing more here than her retellings. I believed in her characters and wanted them to succeed. I am looking forward to reading the next book, I couldn't actually remember which book was first when I checked this out but learned that as far as the story is concerned this is first, although it was written after.

I have to admit, I had a hard time getting into this book, and getting used to McKinley's jumpy writing style. But after the first fifty pages, I was hooked. I loved the strong female heroine, the friendships that developed, and the symbolism. Oh, and of course the oh-so-subtle romantic tension was what kept me wondering.

I can't remember which book you should read first...this one or Hero and the Crown. They go together, one was written before the other, yet someone recommended them to me in a certain order. All well, both really great books :-)
