This was a beautiful, romantic retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I am actually quite partial to the Disney movie, but this was so much better. I haven't read the original French version since High School (in English, from France, not in French. I didn't like that one very much. This is my favorite! Read this again in Jan 2012 for book club. Loved it just as much as before.

I’d read this once before as a teen but didn't remember much besides that I had liked it, so I recently decided it was worth another re-read.
Would it be trite to say that I found this book, uh, enchanting? The story was just a little slow-going at first, but by “Part III” I was hooked and could hardly set it down. The writing was good; descriptive without getting bogged down. The main character, Beauty, was practical, ...more

it's a good story and well told-- but I do still find the idea of agreeing to marry an animal unsettling and disturbing. But I guess since it's a fairy tale you can ignore minor *cough cough* major details like that.
