I liked this book a lot. I've not studied or read a lot about the Civil War except for a few books about Abraham Lincoln. I hadn't heard of the main character in this novel based on true events, Elizabeth Van Lew. What a courageous, inspiring and diligent woman she was. Though she lived in Virginia, she was a Unionist to the core and spent much of her private fortune freeing slaves, as well as operating a spy ring that aid in Richmond falling to the North.
