I'd heard of the Wright Brothers, but beyond "Orville and Wilbur" and "Kitty Hawk" and something about Ohio I really knew nothing else about them.

And as for McCullough: as a former history major, it was almost an embarrassment that I hadn't really read anything written by him. (I did listen to 1776 last summer, which I now remember nothing about, so can I really count that?)

So I was glad that this month's book club pick was The Wright Brothers by David McCullough. I really enjoyed McCullough's s

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the subject matter and the way it was presented. I am happy that the author is talented enough to write a non-fiction book without using foul language either in quoting others or in his own narrative. I was beginning to believe no author could do that anymore. Even though the Wrights were exemplary men, I’m sure some of the mechanics, soldiers and others they worked with sometimes used foul language but McCullough is able to let us get involved in the ex ...more

OK. So I am an unabashed fan of David McCullough's works. This book was a winner because of his expertise as an author, historian and account of a miraculous event that did indeed change the world. But the true beauty of the book was insight into a family, two brothers in particular who were dedicated to hard work with integrity and ingenuity. Wilbur and Orville placed themselves in the right place at the right time in the right way. Many visionaries with brilliant minds are bringing about new m ...more

I love non-fiction historical books, and David McCullough has a gift at making history spell-binding and helping me understand the character of individuals. I did not know much about the Wright brothers and loved the stories of their early life, bicycle shop, and their study of aviation long before they made an airplane.

Others may not like it as much as I did, but I think it is a captivating read about life at the turn of the century. You won't regret reading it!

Meticulously researched fascinating account of the Wright brothers, and what remarkable men they were, not only for their time, but even now.

Fabulous study of what it takes to change the world. The Wright Brothers were not university educated men with great letters after their names. They were educated through the books in their minister father's home library. They were both fascinated by the concept of heavier -than - air flying machines. They studied birds to figure out the secrets of their flight. More than just a how-to book, this is the story of the personalities behind the great achievements. This is a great read for History lo ...more
