I'd heard of the Wright Brothers, but beyond "Orville and Wilbur" and "Kitty Hawk" and something about Ohio I really knew nothing else about them.
And as for McCullough: as a former history major, it was almost an embarrassment that I hadn't really read anything written by him. (I did listen to 1776 last summer, which I now remember nothing about, so can I really count that?)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the subject matter and the way it was presented. I am happy that the author is talented enough to write a non-fiction book without using foul language either in quoting others or in his own narrative. I love non-fiction historical books, and David McCullough has a gift at making history spell-binding and helping me understand the character of individuals. I did not know much about the Wright brothers and loved the stories of their early life, bicycle shop, and their study of aviation long before they made an airplane.
Others may not like it as much as I did, but I think it is a captivating read about life at the turn of the century. You won't regret reading it! ...more

Fabulous study of what it takes to change the world. The Wright Brothers were not university educated men with great letters after their names. They were educated through the books in their minister father's home library. They were both fascinated by the concept of heavier -than - air flying machines. They studied birds to figure out the secrets of their flight. More than just a how-to book, this is the story of the personalities behind the great achievements. This is a great read for History lo
