I am besotted with this book, completely smitten! Janet (Joan) is a girl after my own heart. In fact, if anyone ever asks the question, "If you were a character in a book, which character would you be" I now have my answer. (It's good to prepare yourself for questions like these. You never know when they'll sneak up on you.) This was a great historical fiction of a hired girl in Baltimore in 1911. It is written in a diary-style of entries.
I felt the characters were well developed and flawed perfectly.
The story was well researched and well developed: very interesting and insightful into the time.
Not an adventure novel, but great themes about prejudice, opportunity, and family.
