4.5 stars. Great story of a grumpy old man who feels useless and his friendly, needy neighbors. I would've given it 5 stars, (view spoiler) It was amusing that Ove thought nothing of being insulting but was honest and loyal to a fault.

I had a tough time deciding which elements I liked or disliked, so bear that in mind when reading my list.

Don't tell my husband, but I've just fallen in love with a grouchy old man named Ove, who really has a huge heart. Just don't tell Ove that. This book is one of the best debut novels that I've ever read. It is translated into English, having originally been written in Swedish. At times funny sometimes sad, always charming and often witty, this book will keep you entertained until the very last page. Oh, and the other main character is a cat, who has no name other than the Cat Annoyance. ...more

I struggled with the negativity and unkindness of Ove in the first half of the book as well as thinking of it as just another predictable plot about a curmudgeon who learns to love because of animals, kids, etc. And it was that but something about the second half made this well-worn plot device seem new and I found it delightful. The unfolding of Ove's backstory added a lot depth to the book and tore at my heart at times. Anyway, definitely worth a read! ...more

Late to the party reading this one but I loved it so much. Especially the very last line.

4.5 Stars.
At first I thought this book seemed slow. I was questioning why everyone enjoyed this book about a suicidal old man. After chapter five I was hooked. I loved the memories and flashbacks to how he became who he was.
It was a good reminder to not judge somebody, because you don't know their story. It's also a good reminder how much you touch other people's lives without realizing it. It was beautiful.

**There is lots of language and suicide attempts.

My friends all seemed to love this one but I guess I didn't. The ending was okay but I felt like I dragged myself through the rest of it.

Clean-reading friends: this has way more swear words than I usually tolerate.
