This is such a cute story about dragons and those who train them. It's funny and entertaining and was a quick read.

I have been reading this book to my seven year old son. We have had fun together with this humorous and sardonic story.
Hiccup is the son of a Viking chief. He does not fit into preconceived notions of what a chief's son should be. He is making his way in his society his way. I love it that he is different, not following the crowd! I think this is a great message for the youth. ...more

I picked this up after loving the movie. This is very different than the movie. Yes, this is normal for books vs. movies, but this is one time I liked the movie more. Much more. The only redeeming value of the book was the end. It is your basic ‘loser-kid-overcomes-gigantic-odds-and-surprises-everyone’ (except the reader). I suppose if you’re out to write a book to enthrall young boys, then this has it all: from potty humor to proving yourself. I did find myself laughing out loud with my kids at

This book is probably geared more toward boys with it's goofy names and boy characters. A good book which taught that using your brain and perseverance pays off. As with many books, it's not at all like the movie.

It had dragons and funny extras (the yelling, the book pages, the random pictures), and it had an excellent ending. Otherwise, the book was too short to really get to know any of the characters, but I'd say I do like the movie better, which makes me feel like a traitor. The movie has more going on, with Hiccup changing an entire society. And there are girls in the movie. Not so much in the book.
And Toothless is way better in the movie, although he has more attitude in the book.

I read this in an effort to find books for my grandsons and I to read together. It was creative in some ways but for my purpose, I would like a more consistent, easy to read font. It is geared to preteens and I thought too crude in many ways. Lots of mention of body function and fluids. Not my cup of tea. However, I might read it with them in the future. It would be a bit too hard for the younger grandson right now.

Not like the movie, but a fun book anyway. Learning how to train a dragon is similar to learning how to raise kids, I think. Trial and error. I think I'll try telling more jokes to my kids when I need them to do something!

haven't watched the movie yet (at least all the way through) but it seems muh better than this was! Read to my 5 and 3 year old and was underimpressed, story was just ok, not a classic I'm glad I read to them.

I’m surprised this doesn’t have a higher average rating.
