I wanted to give this 4 stars. I liked the writing style, descriptions and characters but I found the crudeness, though mild, offputting especially since this story seems to be written for 4th-6th grade.
This book has a similar feel to other middle grade stories set in the south.

When my 1st grader brought this home from his school library, I thought I'd better pre-read it before he did. I enjoyed it very much, and I'm going to see if the 5th & 7th graders want to read it, but I'm going to tell the 6yo he'll just have to wait until he's a little older to read this one. (Some hard-reality content, not to mention I don't think he'd understand much of the wording if he read silently to himself.) ...more

3.5 stars--I liked the the story and the characters were creative but it did not leave wanting more. The mystery and murder were out of place with the target audience. My 7 year old was drawn to it, but I would not recommend it for her.

This was a great book! I love the relationship that Mo had with all of the people from the very small town that she lived in. I could totally see this made into a family movie. LOVED this book!

Good book for 8-12, but doesn't cross over for an adult read well. Fairly juvenile. Fun, well written for the younger crowd. ...more

An orphaned girl dreams of finding her mother while also trying to solve a murder committed in her small, close knit community.
There are some very colorful, likeable characters in this story, and it's written in a fun humorous way. I like what the girl learns about herself and it's got a good pace as they unravel the mystery.

The beginning was great, kind of slowed down towards the end, but I loved the funny characters, the interesting connections and twists.
