When my 1st grader brought this home from his school library, I thought I'd better pre-read it before he did. I enjoyed it very much, and I'm going to see if the 5th & 7th graders want to read it, but I'm going to tell the 6yo he'll just have to wait until he's a little older to read this one. (Some hard-reality content, not to mention I don't think he'd understand much of the wording if he read silently to himself.)

Good book for 8-12, but doesn't cross over for an adult read well. Fairly juvenile. Fun, well written for the younger crowd.
