The fourteeth Goldfish is a pretty easy read for late elementary early middle school age reader which I assume is the target audience. It isn't very challenging as far as writing or vocabulary. My 12 year old had no trouble flying through the book at super speed to finish it in a hour. While the writing was pretty simple the subject wasn't.

This is a book about life, death, and growing up. Throw that together with some science and you get rather humorous look a somewhat serious subject.

I loved this middle grade book about dealing with change and the inevitability of change!

Ellie's life is undergoing changes that she isn't happy about. Her best friend is moving on to other friends. She has left fifth grade and is now in sixth attending a middle school. Her grandfather is now living with them as a teenager and she found out her goldfish hasn't lived for seven years. It has been replaced several times by a concerned mother.

There are many great lessons that can be taken away from

A great book I think all preteens-adults should read about growing old and about those who will come after us...

“'Is growing up, growing old-life-is it so terrible?...
“'Because I want to try it,' I whisper. 'I’m only twelve.'"

"But maybe life’s also precious because it doesn’t last forever. Like an amusement park ride. The roller coaster is exciting the first time. But would it be as fun if you did it again and again and again?"

“Our greatest responsibility is to be good ancestors.” (LOVE that!)

Ellie is 11 years old and starting to learn about life. She starts off believing that she has the magical goldfish that has lived for many years and then learns the truth from her mother. Ellie's parents are divorced. She lives with her mother, who is dating someone new, but still has a good relationship with her father. Her best friend has interests that are different than hers and is starting to hang out with new people so she is looking for new friends. Her grandfather has discovered the secr ...more

Overall, this book oozes middle-gradeness -- it feels bouncy, fresh, innocent, and is like a cheerleader for science. But then it surprised me by taking a more serious turn, a debate about whether humans should be given a way to be young again. Science can produce amazing things, but the consequences need to be considered seriously. Then the tone lightens again, keeping this book appropriate to its younger audience.

Loved how this book points young readers toward loving science. It's a great book to prompt elementary kids to start thinking about the ethics of scientific discovery.

We listened to this as an audio book on a road trip. Some parts seemed to drag a little and this wasn't as beloved as our previous audio books (Origami Yoda), but my eleven-year-old liked it pretty well.

Quirky book about a 12 year old girl who learns to love science and great scientists through her unusual grandfather and his science-fiction experiments. Fast read, with many funny, laugh-out-loud parts that my kids loved.

I read it as a read aloud with my kids. I thought it would be a fun, light way to start out our new school year. I didn't really care for it overall. The tween romances and middle school attitude annoyed me. ...more

Fun science fiction. Imagine having your grandparent be your peer. Lots of humor fused into a thought provoking topic - if you could find the fountain of youth, would you want to take advantage of it? I think this would be of interest to those in 6th grade and up - maybe 5th
