Overall Review: Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy is a very special book. It is by no means a ‘feel-good’ book, but it is one of the most amazing books I’ve ever read. Everything in this book is intense; there was not one moment that I was bored or felt like putting it down. Wow. From the intricate relationships of the people to the astonishing personification of the sea breeze, I was totally enthralled. The dynamics of this novel are well thought out and powerful—Turner’s growth is phenomen ...more

It took a couple chapters to get into this book but I'm so glad that I kept on going. This is a story about standing up for what is right even when you stand alone. Turner Buckminster is a lovable character who sees the best in people as he tries to fit into his new home off the coast of Maine. Based on historical facts, it is also a sad tale of how racial intolerance and greed destroyed an innocent group of good people. ...more

Schmidt captures bittersweet with a touch of humor better than any author I have ever read. This book is darker than his other stories, but also filled with hope and kindness. I loved the descriptions of Maine and the historical setting. An all around lovely book that will make children really think. I could easily see a bazillion interesting essay questions for middle school aged children. So many great topics to discuss and explore. I'll read this book to my children in a year or two... ...more

I'm falling in love with this author. I didn't like this one quite as much as "The Wednesday Wars" but it was still really good. This book is based on true events that took place in a small town in Maine in 1911 but most of the characters are fictional. I loved the characters I was supposed to love and hated the ones I was supposed to hate. I think this could make for a good book club selection because there are several themes that could lead to good discussion. ...more

Outstanding coming-of-age story, based on a true piece of history, but so sad! Prepare yourself before you start this one.

Really loved this story. Very emotionally moving with an overall theme of “love is always the answer. “

I LOVED this historical fiction account of a small town in Maine in 1912. The dialogue and setting is picturesque and so funny at the same time. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say--READ IT! I was laughing and crying through the book. ...more
