Reader thoughts: I could never figure out how old Christopher was, and that bothered me. Because of this, I wasn't able to relate to him or care about him the way I wanted to.
Christopher's parents have tried getting him tutors and governesses for 2 or 3 years, and so I think he might be as old as 9. This one was so much fun to read! I got to read it in just a couple of sittings and I think that helped make it even more magical for me. I liked Christopher's character; sincere, realistic. I loved that he struggled with things that should have been easy for him, and that he had a lot to learn about people. I could see one plot turn and wanted to shake him to make him realize it. I don't read much fantasy, but Diana Wynne Jones is an exception. "The Lives of Christopher Chant" is the enchanting tale (pun fully intended and completely apt!) of how the Crestomanci of "Charmed Life" became the Crestomanci. Speaking of which, I think it's time I read "Charmed LIfe" again right now!
