Much better than I expected. I want to read more of her works.
I, too, have mixed emotions about this one. I enjoyed the mystery element, but the plot did not move fast enough. I am unsure it will speak to kids.
What a great story. It was creepy but not to intense. And the good guys win in the end which is always great.
Interesting storyline -- not quite a children's book, it seemed to me. A satisfying read, although it took a while to get into the book (Definitely not a first time that's happened!). So much detail,too! But I suppose that adds to the novel's tone of gothic richness.

Probably more like 3.5 stars for me. Reminds me a lot of the original Grimm's Fairy Tales, and folks who like those will likely like this book too. Magic, mystery, witches and children, with a hint of darkness as children have to work together to escape the evil magicians. I enjoyed listening to it, although the narrator took some getting used to at first. My 11-year-old enjoyed the book too.

One reviewer called this "dreary" and I'd have to agree. Completely different in style and tone from The Hired Girl.
