This is a great book. Cassandra Clare writes so beautifully. I love the Victorian England time period. The customs and atmosphere sound so interesting.
I love the characters. Tessa, the main character, is someone to root for. From the very beginning her story pulled on my heart strings. I wanted to see her succeed. I liked that she seemed a bit naive and innocent. Of course I don't want every character in every book to be naive and innocent, but I did enjoy that aspect of Tessa. She was also stro ...more

Re-read 2023:
Upping this from a 3 star to a 4. I enjoyed it a lot more this time as I wasn’t trying to compare it to TMI.
First read 2019:
Surprisingly, I wasn’t drawn into this series like I was with The Mortal Instruments and the Dark Artifices. The characters weren’t as magnetic and there wasn’t enough Magnus Bane! Also, I think part of it had to do with the fact that I enjoy a modern setting over a historical one. Even so, I liked it enough to continue on with the series.

Will's character bugged me most of the time and sometimes it just didn't feel like the story and characters "fit" in Victorian England. But overall it was entertaining.

I wasn't as blown away by this book as I expected to be.. and Will wasn't as swoon worthy as I wanted him to be. Does he get better?
